The sun was beating down mercilessly on the asphalt as James walked through the parking lot. His eyes scanned the parked cars, looking for any signs of distress. He was a veteran and had seen too many instances of neglect and abuse to turn a blind eye.

He peered inside and saw a puppy, panting heavily in the scorching heat. James knew he had to act fast, but the car was locked, and there was no sign of the owner. He tried to call for help, but the police were too far away to arrive in time.
